Judy, I was exactly the same way more than 2 years ago. Most people are unaware of hidden glutamate sources in the diet, that can take sugar cravings to another level. Caffeine enhances the glutamate response too, and since glutamates are usually alongside the sugars in most foods, it can be highly addictive to break the habit unless you know the foods to eat along with the timing of food. This is why chocolate is so addictive--it has caffeine that enhances the addictive response of the glutamate (probably from dried milk powders in the chocolate), and also the sugars along side it. Breads are probably one of the most addictive foods because they have some of the highest glutamate levels compared to other foods. Gluten interestingly enough has one of the highest sources of glutamates, so those that go 'gluten free' are benefiting from having less MSG in their diet. Glutmates become concentrated when anything is dried out as a food, such as dried fruit, beef jerky, milk powders, nearly all grains (except rice), and so forth. Excess glutamates in the diet also influences anything neurological-related from migraines to epilepsy to Alzheimer's disease to autism. As a matter of fact, just this last year a new anti-glutamate drug has been made as a cure to Alzheimer's. Taurine, magnesium and Vit B6 and B12 are very effective in helping to control excess glutamate.

Back to sugar cravings...I personally had to do these things in the past to remove the sugar cravings.

1. Reduced daily sugar levels down to about 60-80 grams per day (this took time too before I got there).

2. Never eat sugar in the window after 2-3 hours after waking up in the morning. Only eat fats and proteins in the morning because the cortisol hormone response will be increased, causing you to crave more sugars later on in the day if you eat sugars earlier upon waking. Cortisol levels are always highest in humans after waking up in the morning. I typically have eggs, or turkey sausage, or peanut butter with celery. Having just fats and proteins in the morning should help you feel more satisifed throughout the day as well with eating fewer calories to get to a net caloric loss and ultimately lose more fat.

3. Hormonal rebalance was essential for me to get my ghrelin, insulin and leptin levels back under control. The ghrelin hormone controls your hunger response, so there is a method that exists out there called 'Intermittent Fasting' which really isn't fasting at all, but it's just eating your food in a window of time each day and going more than 12 hours each day without eating. The science is solid and it was my main tool to break the sugar cravings. As a matter of fact, I think Intermitten Fasting could be used as a treatment for Alcholism as well. It increases the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) in the body alongside rebalancing the insulin and leptin resistances. More dramatically, it targets fat from the body to stimulate more ketosis. Like I said, it was the major tool that allowed me to lose over 70 pounds and maintain the fatloss too over time because if I gain more over the holidays for instance, I just bump up the intermittent fasting again.

The combined approach of Intermittent Fasting with Low-Sugar intake daily along with choosing foods that are low-glutamate foods is an extremely effective way to lose the cravings for myself when I did this about 2 years ago, and I'll never go back. But it takes about 2-3 weeks to get through the initial addiction withdrawals and another 2-3 months thereafter to really allow the physiology of the body to adjust to the lower sugar intake and adjust to the lifestyle of eating that way. I saw a steady fatloss of about 1-2 pounds per week as well and reached my goal weight several months ago with just moderate exercise during the entire period.

The trick is really finding foods that are higher in proteins and fats and low in sugar content. My staples have been eggs, peanut butter, avocadoes, tuna, salmon, turkey, chicken, beef, nuts, seeds, plain yogurt, whole milk, bananas and blueberries in moderation, most veges like eggplant, celery, onions, etc.. Always go for organic if you have the choice too.

God Bless!

Dr. Mercola continually tells us why sugar is harmful to us, especially the fructose component that can only be metabolized in the liver. What most people are unaware of is that all grains and starches are equivalent to sugar as well, so it's quite easy to cut out the direct sugar but not cut down the bread, pastas, potatoes, etc. Also, too much fruit can also be problematic. This is probably why Steve Jobs developed cancer due to his obsession with being a fruititarian.

This is not Atkins in new form. Atkins begins adding carbs into the diet much too soon. And when that doesn't work (because you are still eating too many carbs), suggests you reduce the fat in your meals. Doesn't work
Eating as much fat, cheeses, fatty meats, sour cream, cream as you desire (your body will tell you to stop if you listen) will satisfy the sugar/carb cravings.
Fat to Skinny works, because you don't add the carbs in until after you lose all the excess fat you need to...then you adjust your intake of carbs to your personal level. When the weight stays level, you found it. If that's lower than you want it to be, then you are either grateful that you have solved the fattening mystery...or you go back to eating more carbs than your body can handle. In other words, you give food/sugar the power to run your life.
Water, sleep and vitamins, especially B vitamins.
